About Us

The National Association of Working Mothers was founded  in November 2001, by Netherland Washington, a working mother of five children ages 4, 12, 18, 21 and 22.

She has maneuvered the obstacles of motherhood and work, as both a single and now married mother for 20 years.  When she envisioned this association, she initially looked for an organization specifically designed and detailed for working mothers and to her surprise, there were none.  She was pleasantly surprised by the number of women who were looking for the same venue, who were more than eager to join and help!

Mrs. Washington’s vision of NAMW is helping alleviate the isolation that many working mothers experience, through a number of planned events, guest speakers, workshops, newsletters and educational productions.  Each created and crafted to enhance and rejuvenate the lifestyles and well-being of the Working Mother.

Mrs. Washington has marveled at those women who manage motherhood and family, almost flawlessly, yet she wanted to reach out and help those she sees struggle with all that motherhood can bring!  She says, "I am especially in awe of those women, who take on this task, either voluntarily or involuntarily, by themselves, as they portray countless roles; within themselves, at home and in the workplace."

NAWM’s vision is to empower working mothers with the necessary skills and resources that will help improve upon personal well-being, lifestyle, work and family life.

Mrs. Washington is a member of GWSAE (Greater Washington Society of Association Executives), Maryland Association of Non-Profit Organizations and Maryland Board of Commerce.
